Police have detained a 29-year-old Polish man suspected of murdering his 20-year-old partner, whose body was found in a compartment in the man's home.

The victim and her two-and-a-half-year-old son, from Zduńska Wola near Łódź, central Poland, went with the man to Łódź in mid-August.

The suspect returned the boy to the victim’s family the next day and said the woman had decided to stay behind before disappearing.

The case gained prominence after Polish media reported that police did not search the man's home during the search for the missing woman. The press suggested that police missed the body in the couch. A separate inquiry is being held into the investigating officers’ possible negligence.

The woman's body was found nine days after her disappearance. Autopsy results show she suffocated.

Police on Tuesday said: “As a result of an intense hunt, police determined that the wanted man, Artur W., may be in Koszalin [northwestern Poland]. He was recognized and detained by traffic police”.

Police determined that a British court had sentenced the man to at least four years in jail for rape in 2011, while in 2015 – the same year he started going by a different name – he was charged with “bodily harm” in Germany. (vb/pk)
