Sixty-five percent of Poles have a positive view of the performance of President Andrzej Duda, according to a new survey by pollster CBOS.

Compared with a similar poll in July, the president’s approval rating shot up by 10 percentage points, with the number of critics falling by 7 percentage points to 28 percent.

In a comment on the poll findings, CBOS said the president’s “record” popularity can be attributed to his recent veto of two pieces of legislation to reform Poland’s judiciary.

“By distancing himself from the ruling Law and Justice party, the president demonstrated his independence as head of state,” CBOS said.

Meanwhile, respondents are more critical of the work of Poland’s parliament than four weeks ago. Sixty-four percent -- 8 percentage points more than in July -- hold a negative opinion of the country’s lower house, with only one in four respondents -- five percentage points less than a month ago -- assessing the chamber’s performance positively.

The poll was conducted between 17 and 24 August on a representative group of 1,009 adult Poles, using computer-assisted personal interviewing. (mk/str)
