Poland’s ruling conservatives way ahead: survey

Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party is backed by 38 percent of voters, according to a new survey by pollster Kantar Public.

The opposition Civic Platform (PO) party is way behind, on 16 percent, the survey found.
The anti-establishment Kukiz’ 15 group is on nine percent, and the Nowoczesna (Modern) party on eight percent, according to the survey.
The poll found no other parties would make it into the Sejm, the lower house of parliament.
The survey was conducted on 1-6 September on a representative sample of 1,018 Polish adults.
In a comment on the poll findings, Civic Platform leader Grzegorz Schetyna said his party’s poor result was due to a lack of cooperation between various opposition groups.
Interviewed by a commercial radio station, Schetyna said that talks were under way on new scenarios aimed at forging unity “on the opposition side.”
An ability to iron out differences over programmes and leadership would be “a real test” for the maturity of the opposition, he added.
If the opposition manages to join forces, it will be able to defeat the country’s ruling conservatives in next year’s local government elections, according to Schetyna. (mk/gs)
