Speaking at a team press conference in the United States, Gortat said of Duda: “I am proud of him and the values he represents.”

Gortat was responding to a question from a journalist that came after Duda unveiled new proposals for legal changes in Poland.

His words triggered a wave of comments on social media, some of them critical and some supportive.

In July, Gortat attended a reception hosted by the Polish presidential couple during British royals William and Kate's goodwill visit to Poland.

Gortat, who began his international career 15 years ago, has often spoken about his love for Poland and his pride of being Polish.

He organises the annual Polish Heritage Night in the United States, an event that celebrates Poland and its traditions. (gs/pk)
