The 42-year-old from Bydgoszcz, northern Poland, and his 44-year-old friend from Wola Górzańska, had found the war-time bomb in a forest near the village, according to police spokeswoman Anna Klee.

Thirty metres from the 44-year-old's home the men started a fire with which they probably intended to heat the bomb, said Klee.

The bomb exploded, killing the older man on the scene.

Police found war memorabilia in the 44-year-old's home, including weapons, shells and ammunition which posed a threat, so the bomb squad was called to the property. (vb/pk)
