The train was derailed in the accident in Nowe Gronowo, near the town of Człuchów, state broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

The driver of the garbage truck failed to stop before driving onto the crossing, Polish Radio added.

“The train hit the middle of the truck with full force,” said Sławomir Gradek, a spokesman for local police.

The truck driver “heard a signal from the train driver only when he was in the middle of the crossing. But then it was too late. He accelerated but did not have time to leave” the crossing, the spokesman added.
