Meanwhile, 161 people were caught driving drunk, police spokesman Dawid Marciniak said.

Police have asked drivers to be especially careful as huge numbers of Poles make an annual trip to cemeteries across the country to mark a Catholic commemoration of the dead.

Police also appealed to pedestrians to be careful on roads and in parking lots and to be wary of pickpockets at crowded cemeteries.

Last year, 39 people were killed and 441 injured in 425 accidents, and 1,197 drunk drivers were caught around 1 November. (vb/pk)
