Police stopped more than 1,800 drink-drivers. There were 609 accidents.

Radosław Kobryś, from police headquarters in Warsaw, said there were 30 fewer accidents than in the same period last year and fewer people died on the roads.

He added that despite the increasing number of cars in Poland, the number of accidents was slowly falling.

The Catholic Church’s All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2 are when millions of Poles traditionally visit the graves of their loved ones, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to their home towns.

A total of 5,000 police took part in this year’s Operation Torch road safety campaign.
