‘Dangerous Russian ambitions’ pose security challenge: Polish official

Halting “dangerous Russian ambitions” and cooperation between NATO and the EU are among key challenges for Polish security policy, a senior official said in Warsaw on Wednesday.

Paweł Soloch, the head of Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN), which answers to the president, was speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum conference.
He said a key security challenge for Poland was to "continue to halt dangerous Russian ambitions” in Central and Eastern Europe.
“Ensuring peace, stability and predictability in Europe, and especially in our immediate neighbourhood, is the main objective of Poland's security policy," Soloch added.
Meanwhile, he said, Russia’s "readiness and ease in deciding to use armed forces against neighbouring countries (Georgia, Ukraine) in order to realise its interests has for years been undermining the existing European security order."
The Warsaw Security Forum was also to tackle issues such as energy and cyber security, the future of the EU, including a common security and defence policy, and the development of anti-aircraft and missile defence systems.
At a NATO summit in Warsaw last year, the Western military alliance decided to deploy four multinational battalions to Poland and three Baltic states, which fear potential Russian aggression following Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
