A policeman has died and three others have been injured after a bank robber opened fire from a machine gun after being caught red-handed trying to break into a cash machine, Polish police said.

A shootout with police started after a group of suspects trying to break into a cash machine was spotted in southern Poland.
"Sad news. As they were being stopped in the act ... a culprit opened fire from a machine gun in the direction of police officers who fired back in self-defence," police said on Twitter.
According to the PAP news agency, which cited "unofficial information," an attacker also died in the shootout. (vb/pk)
