Poland's ruling conservatives will decide on Thursday evening whether a long-awaited Cabinet reshuffle will see Beata Szydło replaced as prime minister, a senior official has said.

The reshuffle will take place next week, said Ryszard Terlecki, deputy Speaker of the lower house and head of the parliamentary caucus of Poland's governing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

"The PiS Political Committee will decide this evening whether a government reshuffle will also include the prime minister's position," Terlecki told public broadcaster TVP Info.

Earlier on Thursday, Terlecki had told reporters that the name of a new prime minister would “certainly” be made public later in the day.

The Law and Justice government is halfway through its term in office.

The party swept to power in October 2015 in a landslide election victory, ending eight years of a government led by its arch-rival, the Civic Platform, now Poland's largest opposition group.

Gov't survives confidence vote

The government on Thursday morning survived a vote of no-confidence motion put forward by the opposition.

The bid by the Civic Platform had no chance of succeeding since Law and Justice holds a majority in parliament.

Meanwhile, the ruling party’s spokeswoman Beata Mazurek said earlier on Thursday that “it is not a secret that a proposal has appeared” for Deputy Prime Minister and Finance and Development Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to replace Szydło as prime minister.

Mazurek added, however, that a definitive decision on the matter “has yet to be made.”

Szydło said in a media interview on Wednesday that next year Poland’s ruling conservatives planned to focus on policies to further improve the economy and ensure even faster growth to consolidate the country’s “historically lowest unemployment, the best results in terms of economic growth in six years, and the best results in terms of public finances.”

In late October, Szydło denied media speculation she might lose her job in a government reshuffle.
