Six people have been injured and 50,000 households have been left without electricity in Poland, firefighters said on Tuesday morning after strong winds and heavy snowfall hit the south of the country.

Firefighters have been called out 1,100 times since Sunday, including 800 times over the last 24 hours, mostly in the Śląskie, Małopolskie and Podkarpackie provinces in the south and southeast of the country.

Fierce winds ripped the roofs off 16 buildings, and damaged more than 230.

Five people were taken to hospital with minor injuries when a tree fell on a car in which a family were travelling on Monday in Bujaków, southern Poland.

Fire service spokesman Paweł Frątczak said winds of up to 160 kph were expected on Tuesday high in the Tatra and Bieszczady mountains.
