Man charged over arson attack on Polish gov’t minister’s office

A man who has admitted to an arson attack on the MP’s office of a Polish government minister has been charged with a crime “of a terrorist nature,” prosecutors said on Friday.

The suspect had aimed to sway Poland’s conservative government to halt sweeping changes to the country’s judicial and electoral systems, said prosecutor Robert Tomankiewicz.
The suspect broke the window of a door at premises used by Beata Kempa, who heads the Polish Prime Minister’s Office with the rank of minister. He then doused the office with a flammable substance and set it on fire, Tomankiewicz said.
The suspect -- named only as “Sebastian K” -- faces up to 15 years in prison.
The arson attack took place in Syców, south-western Poland, in the early hours of Tuesday.
Kempa is a deputy for the United Poland (Solidarna Polska) party, a rightist group led by Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro which is part of the conservative government.
Syców is Kempa’s home town.
