Poles celebrate New Year's Eve

The biggest Polish TV broadcasters have had their New Year's Eve parties in the largest cities all over Poland, attracting thousands of people.

Some 80,000 people attended a New Year's Eve event in Zakopane, southern Poland, organized by Polish National Television (TVP). The public broadcaster hosted such music stars as Modern Talking and Maryla Rodowicz, but the highlight star was Luis Fonsi with his hit song "Despacito."

The performance by Fonsi, broadcasted live by TVP2, was watched by a record of 6.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen Audience Measurement.

Commenting on the figures, TVP chairman Jacek Kurski said on Monday: "We are rebuilding the strength, prestige and position of Polish Television."

Meanwhile, TVN played in Warsaw, attracting thousands of the capital's inhabitants and visitors who could listen to such top Polish musicians as Kayah and Beata Kozidrak.

Katowice, southern Poland, had its own big New Year's Eve event in cooperation with private broadcaster Polsat.
