Part of the two-storey building in which the couple lived collapsed after the blast, believed to have been caused by an exploding gas bottle.

After pulling the man from the rubble, 70 firefighters and rescue dogs searched for hours before the woman's body was found.

Police said the building was home to about a dozen people but only the elderly couple's apartment collapsed.

Remaining residents were evacuated and housed with family or by local authorities. (vb/pk)
