Polish Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński has proposed the establishment of a group spanning government departments to fight the propagation of fascism and other totalitarian regimes.

The group would also tackle hate crimes related to ethnicity, nationality, race and religion.

Brudziński has submitted the proposal to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

The goal of the group would be to propose changes to existing rules. “These changes would allow for greater efficiency in tackling offences such as publicly propagating fascism and other totalitarian regimes and also hate speech,” the interior ministry added.

The team would include officials from the interior, justice, foreign and culture ministries, alongside the police, border guard, the Internal Security Agency and the national prosecutor’s office. The group would also be open to collaboration with civil society organisations advocating human rights.

In January, Brudziński pledged to support efforts to delegalise radical nationalist group Pride and Modernity (Duma i Nowoczesność), which was filmed celebrating Hitler’s birth anniversary in south-western Poland in May 2017.

Propagating fascism or other totalitarian regimes in Poland carries penalties of up to two years in prison. (aba/pk)
