Under a new law signed by President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday, local governments will no longer have to earmark part of their existing residential inventory for public housing in order to gain funding for new property investments.

The new laws also mean local governments can apply for grants for renovations or extensions on homeless shelters and for government-owned rental properties.

The new rules will enter into effect in about a year.

The Polish government in 2016 adopted a National Housing Programme aimed at constructing affordable housing and helping people on low incomes. (vb/pk)
