Mariusz Błaszczak is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, on Thursday, and then sit down for talks with Secretary of Defense James Mattis on Friday.

While in Washington, Błaszczak is also expected to hold talks with US Congressmen, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Błaszczak was expected to fly to the US on Wednesday.

Polish and US officials in late March signed an agreement concluding Phase I of Poland’s purchase of the US-made Patriot missile defense system for USD 4.75 billion.

A day later Błaszczak said that negotiations on Phase II of the deal – part of the country’s wider Wisła (Vistula) air defence programme – would begin in April.

A senior Polish defence ministry official said last week he was convinced that Błaszczak's busy schedule of official meetings in the United States would end with the visit producing “tangible results.”

“It’s too soon to talk about that, but I hope we will have some very good information to communicate after the long [May] weekend,” Deputy Defence Minister Wojciech Skurkiewicz said on Saturday, as quoted by the wpolityce.pl news website.
