President, PM honour Poland's firefighters

Poland’s president and prime minister attended a ceremony in Warsaw during which three senior firefighters were on Saturday formally promoted to general and many others elevated to officers.

President Andrzej Duda said during the ceremony that firefighters, both professional and volunteer, deserved praise because their service required sacrifice and responsibility.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thanked Poland’s firefighters, saying he admired their hard work.

Morawiecki told the several hundred firemen gathered at Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square that they were role models for the public and that he had dreamed of becoming a firefighter as a child.

Poland's interior minister on Friday thanked the nation’s firefighters for their service and dedication.

Friday marked International Firefighters' Day.

There are about 30,000 professional firefighters and nearly 700,000 volunteer firemen in Poland, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.
