Twenty-five people have been killed and 508 hurt in 419 road accidents nationwide since Poles hit the road in droves in the middle of last week for an extended break from work, police said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, officers have stopped 1,078 drunk drivers since Wednesday, May 30, according to Wioletta Szubska, a spokeswoman for the country’s General Police Headquarters.

Police have stepped up checks and appealed to drivers to keep their speed down and and stay alert behind the wheel as major roads were expected to clog up with vehicles on the last day of the holiday weekend.

With the Corpus Christi public holiday on Thursday, May 31, many workplaces have given their employees time off to enjoy what was another long weekend in Poland this spring.
