Grim harvest of long weekend in Poland

Twenty-seven people were killed and over 600 injured in 503 accidents nationwide between the middle of last week and Sunday, when Poles hit the road in droves during an extended break from work, police have said.

During the same period last year, 44 people were killed in 466 accidents.
Officers stopped 1,862 drink drivers between Wednesday and Sunday, up from 1,721 during the same period last year.
With the Corpus Christi public holiday falling on Thursday, May 31, many Poles took Friday off to enjoy what was another long weekend this spring.
