President thanks German leader for marking Polish independence centenary

President Andrzej Duda has thanked his German counterpart for being the first leader to visit Warsaw to mark the centenary of Poland regaining its independence.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday started a two-day visit to Poland for talks on relations between the two neighbouring nations.
"The president is the first leader who has come to our country to celebrate this exceptionally important anniversary with us. Mr. President, thank you very much for that," said Duda.
He added: "The fact that today the president is with us today, in the year [when Poland marks] the centenary of regaining independence... is an extremely important act for us.”
While in the Polish capital, Steinmeier was scheduled to attend a conference on Polish-German partnership within the European Union, according to reports.
Steinmeier was also expected to place a wreath at a monument in the Polish capital honouring the heroes of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi Germans, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Poland regained its independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of foreign rule.
