“Every drop of blood donated … is worth its weight in gold," Dr. Bożena Janicka, head of a healthcare employers' organisation, said, as quoted by Poland’s PAP news agency.

She appealed to “everyone who is not indifferent to the fate of patients in Poland” to become a voluntary blood donor.

"Blood donation stations across Poland are waiting for those who are healthy and want to share their life-saving gift of blood,” Janicka added.

June 14 marked World Blood Donor Day, a global event held by the World Health Organisation every year to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation.

The main message of the campaign is that giving blood saves lives.
