Some 331,000 customers were left without electricity at one point after fierce winds uprooted trees and disrupted power supplies in some parts of the country, including its central Mazovia region, according to reports.

Firefighters were called out a total of 4,300 times to help deal with the aftermath of the storms, a spokesman for the State Fire Service, Paweł Frątczak, said on Friday morning.

The deputy mayor of Wołomin, a town near Warsaw, has died after being crushed by a tree branch, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
