Twenty-seven people died and many more were injured in some 4,000 accidents on Polish farms in the first three months of 2018, the State Labour Inspectorate (PIP) said on Tuesday.

Despite a 20 percent reduction in agricultural workplace accidents compared to the same period last year, there are still far too many, PIP spokeswoman Danuta Rutkowska said.

She said most accidents resulted from falls, from grabbing or being hit by moving parts of machines, and from being squashed or bitten by farm animals.

Rutkowska also said that children were often involved in accidents and urged farm workers to take more care looking after them.

PIP found that children were often driving tractors, operating machinery, and loading and unloading trucks and trailers, which is illegal, and played too close to farm equipment.

Earlier this year, a two year was killed by being run over by a tractor that his father was driving. (vb)
