Her funeral service at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army in Warsaw was attended by President Andrzej Duda and his wife, alongside family members, friends and Olympic athletes.

Szewińska, a five-time Olympian between 1964 and 1980, died last month at the age of 72.

She won golds in the women’s 4x100 metres relay at the Tokyo Games in 1964, the 200 metres at Mexico City in 1968, and the 400 metres at Montreal in 1976. She set eight individual and two team world records.

In later years she was a long-standing member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Fans gathered outside the cathedral on Thursday praised Szewińska as a person as well as for her achievements in sports.
