A MiG-29 military jet crashed near the town of Pasłęk in northern Poland during a night flight on July 6, according to news reports.

“Following a decision by Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak, Lt. Krzysztof Sobański, the pilot who died in the crash of the MiG-29 plane, has been posthumously promoted to captain and awarded the Golden Medal of Merit for Service to National Defence," the defence ministry said in a tweet on Saturday.

Sobański was killed despite ejecting before the crash, according to officials.

His funeral service -- attended by the defence minister, alongside family members, friends and military men -- was held in the northern town of Pruszcz Gdański on Saturday, the Polish defence ministry said.

The Polish Air Force grounded its entire fleet of Soviet-made MiG-29 jets after the crash pending an investigation by a state commission of aviation experts.
