The whale was found during a patrol of the coast by animal rights activists from the Polish wing of the World Wildlife Fund.

It is still unclear what species the whale is, said Iwona Pawliczka, head of the Marine Station in Hel, close to Kąty Rybackie.

She added that the whale was very decayed. It will be removed from the beach and tests should reveal more about the animal.

Pawliczka said it was the third dead whale found on Poland's coast in the last 40 years.

A two-tonne, seven-metre-long whale was found in 2013 and a ten-tonne whale was found in 2015. (vb/pk)
