Poland's upcoming local elections are “key to further positive change” in the country, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said.

Speaking at a campaign rally on Sunday, Morawiecki encouraged voters to support candidates fielded by the ruling majority in the autumn's local government elections.

He argued that his ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party was a credible political group that delivered on its promises.

"We are credible in the central government, and we will be credible in local governments,” Morawiecki said in the southeastern town of Sandomierz as the governing party kicked off its local election campaign at the weekend.

In mid-April, Morawiecki told voters in the southern city of Kraków that Poland’s conservative government was working to craft a new economic model for the country, one in part based on a policy of sustainable development.

Poles will head to the ballot box to vote in local government elections on October 21.

The second round of voting for mayors, aldermen and other local government officials will be held on November 4.
