According to IAR, between May 2013 and April 2014, the Polish man, identified only as Arkadiusz Ł., and his accomplices called their targets and pretended to be family or friends in need.

Also known by his alias “Hoss”, the Pole and his accomplices conned people out of PLN 1.6 million (EUR 370,000; USD 440,000) in cash as well as jewellery worth a further PLN 530,000.

They selected their targets in Germany and Switzerland by looking for “old-sounding names” in a telephone directory, IAR reported, adding that most of their phone calls were made from Poland.

“Hoss” was finally caught when a target, from whom he was allegedly trying to extort PLN 1.5 million, did not fall for the con, according to IAR.

But “Hoss” has denied the charges.

He has been in police detention since he was caught under an arrest warrant in March last year.

The warrant was issued after he fled while under house arrest.

The news agency added that the Pole was already previously charged for similar offences but is yet to be convicted. (vb)
