The spokesman for Poland’s opposition Civic Platform (PO) party on Saturday faced calls to quit after he attended a rally ahead of upcoming local elections where a mayor made sexist remarks.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party said Civic Platform spokesman Jan Grabiec had failed to intervene over comments by the mayor at a pre-election convention in September.

Law and Justice urged Grabiec to resign.

State television broadcaster TVP reported that Roman Smogorzewski, the mayor of Legionowo, north of Warsaw, had described female candidates for a town council as "a bit too pretty" and as “the sex lady”.

Smogorzewski quit the Civic Platform after his comments came to light, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

Poles will head to the ballot box to vote in local government elections on October 21.

The second round of voting for mayors, aldermen and other local government officials will be held on November 4.
