During the debate, the candidates, led by conservative Patryk Jaki and his centrist arch-rival Rafał Trzaskowski, fielded a variety of questions from anchors about mostly local politics and ways of making the Polish capital a better place to live for residents.

Three rival nationwide television stations, TVP Info, TVN 24 and Polsat News, teamed up to hold and broadcast the all-candidate debate, which lasted 90 minutes on Friday.

At one point during the debate, Jaki, who has been supported in his mayoral bid by Poland’s ruling conservatives, offered to give up his party affiliation as a sign of his ability to become an impartial mayor.

Jaki also challenged the opposition’s Trzaskowski to do the same.

With election day just over a week away, Jaki and Trzaskowski appeared to be running neck and neck in the polls, according to media reports.

Poles will head to the ballot box to vote in local government elections on October 21.

The second round of voting for mayors, aldermen and other local government officials will be held on November 4.
