Reimagined Nazi propaganda featuring top Polish conservative politicians was published on Twitter by a Polish opposition member of parliament, according to a report by the Wprost news portal.

The image published by Grzegorz Furgo of the Civic Platform party showed ruling Law and Justice party leader Jarosław Kaczyński, senior conservative politician Antoni Macierewicz, Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, haunting a home with the European Union flag.

The image was captioned: “Evil spirits over your home. Support the European Union and you will be saved”.

In his post on Twitter, Furgo said the image was “meaningful”.

But Twitter users were quick to notice that the image was based on a Nazi poster featuring war-time British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Franklin Roosevelt, USSR leader Joseph Stalin and a caricature of a Jew. The original poster read: “Evil spirits over your home. Work with Germany and you will be saved”.

Piotr Woźniak of Wprost said the Civic Platform party had "plagiarised German fascism".

Furgo has since removed the controversial image from his Twitter feed and apologised for causing offence.

“I had no idea that a similar original dating back to World War II was in existence,” he said. (vb/pk)
