Poles waste 235 kilogrammes of food per person per year, a study by professional services firm Deloitte said.

Around 9 million tonnes of food is wasted in Poland every year.

The data was released ahead of United Nations World Food Day on Tuesday. Events are organised in over 130 countries across the world on the day.

“These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all,” the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization said on its website.

Poland’s environment ministry earlier this year announced a new project to reduce the amount of food that is thrown away.
