October 15 is international White Cane Safety Day, which highlights the needs of people with visual impairment.

Dorota Ciborowska, from a Polish association that helps people with eyesight problems, said that social attitudes are changing.

"Although there is still a lot to do, the awareness of employers is slowly changing -- they are less and less afraid of employing people with visual impairments,” said Ciborowska.

Almost 3 million people in Poland -- about 7 percent of the population -- have eye conditions and sight problems, according to data for 2016 from the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).

Some 42,000 people say they cannot see at all, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
