Fundraising started on All Saints' Day on Thursday, which traditionally sees thousands of people visiting the graves of family members, and will continue until Sunday.

Among 200 fundraisers are a number of celebrities, including actresses Maja Komorowska and Ewa Kasprzyk, painter and costume designer Hanna Bakuła, actress and singer Maria Niklińska, actor Mateusz Damięcki and musician Jan Młynarski.

This year, the drive is collecting funds for the renovation of the so-called Avenue of Catacombs, where there are "exceptional headstones of exceptional people,” said Jerzy Kisielewski, a leader at an organisation dedicated to caring for the historic part of the Powązki cemetery.

Among those buried in the Avenue of Catacombs is Jerzy Waldorff, who initiated the annual All Saints' Day Powązki fundraising drive in 1974.

The funds raised previously saw 35 tombstones in the Avenue of Catacombs renovated this year.

Last year, more than PLN 150,000 was raised over two days. (vb)
