Sunday will mark exactly 100 years since Poland recovered its sovereignty after more than a century of foreign rule.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a letter that "a sense of unity and mutual respect" were needed as the nation celebrated the milestone.

Students from more than 24,000 schools across Poland on Friday sang the national anthem as part of the centennial celebrations.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.
