COP24 opens in Katowice

Beginning on Sunday in the Silesian city of Katowice is the UN's annual two-week conference on climate change known as COP24.

The climate summit is bringing together around 30 000 delegates from almost 200 countries, top state officials, representatives of business and NGOs among them, at this southern Polish city. Talk focus on implementing the provisions of the Paris agreement of 2015, towards the reduction of global warming by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The first plenary session of the summit on Sunday saw Poland's deputy environment minister Michał Kurtyka taking over presidency from Fiji, and discussions dedicated to the agenda for the conference. The official opening of the COP24 summit is scheduled for Monday, December 3, with the participation of Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The conference continues until December 14.
