Polish gov’t in bid to tackle homelessness: official

Poland’s government has earmarked PLN 6 million (EUR 1.4 million) in new funds to help the homeless all over the country, an official said on Wednesday.

The funds will be used to subsidise projects aiming to make homeless people more active in the job market and help them find new homes, Deputy Family, Labour and Social Policy Minister Elżbieta Bojanowska said.
She added that her ministry also aimed to mobilise local governments to cooperate with NGOs to support the homeless.
Thirty-seven people have died of hypothermia, or exposure to the cold, in Poland since November 1, according to the Government Centre for Security.
Officials have appealed to the public to alert authorities if they see homeless people sleeping in the open.
