The incident took place at the Piast coalmine, 650 metres underground. The dispatcher said most likely a large lump of rock or coal broke off a gallery wall and struck the platform the worker was standing on. The dispatcher added: “The miner fell off the platform and hit his head against a caterpillar track of a header machine.”

The worker was taken to hospital, where he died on the same day.

A commission comprising representatives of the health and safety administration is investigating the circumstances of the accident.

According to the statistics of the State Mining Authority, a total of 21 people died in mining accidents last year.

In December, 13 miners, including 12 Poles, died in a methane blast at a Czech coal mine in Karvina, close to the southern Polish border.
