Most of the amount will come from the budget, but some PLN 1.4 bn will be loaned to the Polish state rail operator, PKP, by the European Investment Bank.

The National Railway Programme, which the government said will cost PLN 66.4 billion by the end of 2023, aims to upgrade 9,000 kilometres of Polish railways.

According to Poland’s PAP news agency, it is the biggest modernisation programme in the history of Polish railways.
