During the gathering in Warsaw, the committee discussed its latest report on plans for development, including Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) technology.

The chair of the EBU’s Technical Committee, Judy Parnall, who is also the head of Standards and Industry at Britain’s BBC, said DAB technology is changing the way listeners experience radio broadcasts.

“You can actually put more interactive and online services alongside your speech-only” output, she said.

The EBU’s Director of Technology and Innovation, Antonio Arcidiacono, added that DAB+ “introduces a level of flexibility and a [range] of new services that cannot be provided by using traditional FM.”

Andrzej Rogoyski, the head of Polish Radio, said the public broadcaster is leading the way in digitizing services in his country.

He added: “Today we are the leaders of DAB implementation, while our main commercial competitors are still opposing it.”

The European Broadcasting Union is the world’s leading alliance of public service media. It has 117 member organisations in 56 countries and an additional 34 associates in Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Americas.

EBU members operate more than 2,000 television, radio and online channels and services, and offer content across other platforms. Together they reach an audience of more than 1 billion people around the world, broadcasting in more than 160 languages.

Last month, Polish Radio and the EBU signed an agreement to set up a regional training hub for journalists from across Central and Eastern Europe in Warsaw.
