Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński condemned “hooliganism” and warned that the demonstrators would face legal consequences.

Protesters spilled apples onto the road, setting straw and tyres ablaze in the capital’s Zawiszy Square, causing thick black smoke to spew out.

They demanded guarantees that 50 percent of products in Polish supermarkets should be domestically produced goods, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Last month, farmers from across Poland protested outside the presidential palace in Warsaw, demanding restrictions on food imports.

Agriculture Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski said at the time that the protest was “a political project” and accused the farmers of “complete ignorance” of the role of national and EU authorities in agricultural policy.
