The European Union average is 1.7%, the Gazeta Wyborcza daily has reported, citing data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.

Only four member countries allocated more in 2017—Denmark, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Finland, according to the paper.

However, the daily reported that Poland spends less on back-to-work programmes and unemployment benefits—some 0.4 percent of GDP, while the EU average is 1.2 percent.

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party recently announced an expansion of its flagship “500+” child benefits initiative.

The party has pledged that its programme of giving families with two or more children a handout of PLN 500 (EUR 117, USD 133) a month per child will be expanded to include families with just one child.
