The ex-mayor, Wojciech Kudelski, underwent a life-saving operation after being attacked in front of his house on Monday morning. Police detained a suspect the same day.

Kudelski’s condition is “stable,” Poland's PAP news agency reported.

Kudelski served as the mayor of Siedlce between 2006 and 2018. Last year he was elected to a regional council as a candidate backed by Poland's ruling Law and Justice party.

Earlier this year, a separate incident in which a well-known mayor was fatally stabbed caused shock in Poland.

In January, the mayor of the northern Polish city of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was knifed several times during a high-profile annual charity drive.

Adamowicz died the next day in hospital from severe wounds despite efforts by doctors to save him.
