Sławomir Broniarz, head of the Polish Teachers’ Union (ZNP), said on Thursday: “From Saturday, April 27 from 6am, the Polish Teachers' Union is suspending a nationwide strike -- suspending, but not ending it."

He added that his group would neither “today, nor tomorrow nor in the following days” sign an agreement on teachers' pay that the government has struck with Poland’s Solidarity trade union.

Thousands of schools across Poland have cancelled classes after teachers on April 8 went on a nationwide strike of unlimited duration to demand hefty pay raises.

The protest began just before end-of-school exams at various levels of education.

Meanwhile, the lower house parliament on Thursday backed new rules designed to allow students to sit leaving exams despite the teacher’s strike.
