The four girls and two boys were delivered by Caesarean section at the city’s University Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said the mother is in good condition.

She added that until the last moment the doctors expected quintuplets to be born, and so the final outcome of the delivery took them by surprise.

Each of the babies weighs about 1 kilogramme.

“This is most probably the first set of sextuplets ever born in Poland,” the hospital spokeswoman, Maria Włodkowska, said, as quoted by state news agency PAP.

The odds of giving birth to sextuplets are 1 in 4.7 billion.

Polish President Andrzej Duda tweeted: “What an extraordinary piece of news! Congratulations to the parents and the medical personnel.”

A press conference was due to be held at the Kraków hospital on Tuesday.
