Police gave stattistics for road accidents over the Corpus Christi weekend on Monday, saying 2794 drivers were found to be behind the wheel drunk.

A spokesman for Police HQ in Warsaw said that the main causes of accidents were speeding, failing to give right of way and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Andrzej Maciejewski, Director-General at Poland's National Roads and Motorways told Polish Radio that the edication campaign, 'Weekend Without Victims' will only have effect over many years.

"Only consistent and systematic action and the realisation of such projects will bring us the desired effect," he said on Sunday.

He pointed out that though around 4,000 people died on Poland's roads last year that number has been declining annually since 2007, due to education campaings and police action. (pg)
