One dead in train crash – dozens injured

One passenger died and at least 84 were injured when a Warsaw to Katowice train derailed, Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred at the town of Baby near Piotrkow Trybunalski, central Poland.

First reports suggested four had died in the crash but the PKP train company has only confirmed one death.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk made his way to the scene of the disaster, Friday evening, his office informed.

Around 280 passengers were on board the PKP Intercity express. Those who were not injured have been taken to a nearby school, Jacek Raczyński., director of the Crisis Management Centre in the city of Lodz told the PAP news agency.

The train left Warsaw Central station at 14.04 CET and should have arrived in Katowice in the south west at 18.30 CET.

A witness to the accident said that one of the four wagons of the train suddenly overturned and derailed. Investigators are currently trying to ascertain the cause of the crash. (pg)
