Some 200 people took part in the birthday party of former president Lech Wałęsa, Saturday, who turned sixty eight three days ago.
Among the guests were former prime ministers Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Jerzy Buzek, members of the European and Polish Parliament, government ministers, businessmen, and actors. Prominent writer, Janusz Głowacki, currently working on a script to Andrzej Wajda’s film about Wałęsa, also attended the party, held in Gdańsk, Saturday.
Commenting on his age, Wałęsa said: “I can’t believe I am that old. I didn’t have enough time to get accustomed to it. I lived at such a fast pace that I stopped at thirty. All I need is good health.”
EU Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski described Wałesa as Poland’s guide to freedom.
Instead of flowers, the guests were asked to make donations for a charity helping the physically handicapped people. (mk)
